DuPont gets behind flexo

04/06/2008
study called ‘Packaging the Future The US company backed a study called ‘Packaging the Future’, which highlighted flexo’s environmental benefits

Lisa DiGate, global business director of DuPont Packaging Graphics, held a boat trip last night to present the results of sustainability research project 'Packaging the Future'.

Consumers demands for sustainability are putting pressure on the packaging industry. Often considered "waste", packaging also offers opportunities to have a positive effect on environmental issues, said flexo plate specialist DuPont.
DiGate explains: "A life cycle assessment is a tool used to evaluate the environmental footprint of a product or process. It examines materials, energy consumption and key environmental releases, and evaluates all upstream and downstream products and processes."

DuPont’s research offer a scenario in which one million square metres of printed plastic substrate would move from gravure to flexographic printing, there would be savings on non-renewable energy equivalent to 25,000 gallons of gasoline. At the same time, greenhouse gas emissions savings would, according to the DuPont report, be equivalent to taking 40 US passenger cars off the road for a year.
