Softweb Paper Web Remoisturizing System

Baldwin‘s SoftWeb Remoisturizing System, a particularly cost-effective solution, solves handling and quality issues related to heatset drying of commercial web offset printing.

The SoftWeb supplies a controlled amount of conditioned water and/or water of a hardness degree (4°dH) to the web. Thus the paper recovers a relatively large portion of the moisture evaporated in the heatset dryer. The SoftWeb operates with a non-contacting principle.

Spray chambers of compact design arranged in the immediate vicinity of the upper and the lower side of the paper web generate an atomized spray by means of special spray nozzles. The moisture is evenly distributed in the entire active range of the spray chambers and applied to both sides of the paper web. The number of spray nozzles depends on the web width.

Baldwin Bustle Wheel Systems:

Mechanical Bustle System

The mechanical BALDWIN Bustle System consists of a bustle wheel which is mounted on a crossbar. The bustle wheel is positioned in a printing-free area and is lifted or lowered by an adjusting screw. Thus paper web is lifted or lowered and side register can be corrected within the range of 1 to 3 dots.

Pneumatic Bustle System

The pneumatic BALDWIN Bustle System operates with an air nozzle. The air flow lifts the paper web to a varying degree, according to its intensity. The register is corrected by altering the air flow; this is done by means of a small control box installed externally on the printing unit. As the air nozzles work in a non-contact mode, they can be installed at any point.

Web Severers

Baldwin’s ProTect M180-M196 web severers offer reliable, tried and tested safety systems for commercial and newspaper offset presses.

When the sensors report a web break in the press line, the pneumatically operated ProTect systems immediately sever the web. Depending on the model concerned, the incoming web is either clamped or guided out of the production process.

The Baldwin ProTect systems are compatible with all usual web offset presses and are available for different web widths. With their low space requirement, they can be retrofitted to existing web offset presses easily.

The web severers are installed upstream of the printing units and upstream or downstream of the last heatset dryer.

WebCatcher for Heatset Web Presses

Baldwin’s WebCatcher provides active protection against wrap-ups and reduces downtime to a minimum.

The WebCatcher, a fully integrated automatic web catching system from Baldwin, is designed for all popular web offset presses operating at web speeds up to 18 m/s (only S18). It can be retrofitted in existing printing lines without any problems. The WebCatcher is distinguished by a very small footprint and is installed between the last printing unit and the heatset dryer.

The WebCatcher is a fully integrated system. A built-in sensor monitors the web continuously during the printing process. It senses web breaks and instantly activates the web catching system. If a web break occurs, the WebCatcher pulls the broken web from the last printing unit before it has a chance to wrap around the cylinders and guides it to the floor in front of the dryer. Costly, unproductive downtime is restricted to an absolute minimum, and the press can resume production after only a very short delay.

WebStabilization for High Speed CW Web Presses

Baldwin HighLiner – Multifunctional Units

With a Baldwin HighLiner, printers will be able to monitor and instantly control several parameters and functions of the process and selectively control or change the settings. Baldwin CombiLiner– Multifunctional Units

With a Baldwin CombiLiner, printers are able to monitor and instantly control several parameters and functions of the process and selectively control or change the settings. Ease of operation, accessible cabinet structure with three sections, maintainability, and minimum maintenance requirements are Baldwin’s top priority.

Fountain solution ready for use automatically
The CombiLiner automatically mixes the fountain solution by the integrated Automix AMX 227D which is standard equipment– exactly to your parameters and reproducible at any time. The CombiLiner meters the 2-propanol and the fountain solution concentrate in percent by volume. During printing, the temperature of the fountain solution is continuously maintained at the pre-selected level by cooling in the circuit. Baldwin offers the IpaSonic measuring system for exact measuring and metering of the 2-propanol concentration in the fountain solution as standard equipment. IpaSonic utilises the ultrasonic compression of liquid principle. The main advantage of the IpaSonic is no gradual deterioration of measuring values due to salt ingress and other contamination returning from the print processed fountain solution. Thanks to precise accurate measuring with the IpaSonic, unnecessary 2-propanol metering and increased consumption are avoided.

Cooling - the flexible way
The CombiLiner responds to the heat balance of the press. The dampening and inking units generate a quantity of heat that has to be removed from the press. When the inking unit is cooled more intensively, the damping unit will require a lower cooling capacity and vice versa. With waterless offset printing, the cooling capacity must be entirely transferable to the inking unit. On customer request, the CombiLiner units are available with ink roller single cooling temperature system. With regard to the dissipation of heat, the Baldwin CombiLiner offers several possibilities.

Baldwin DailyLiner- Fountain Solution Premixing, Circulating and Cooling for Spray Dampening Systems

The DailyLiner series offers welcoming advantages for ease of operation and maintenance. For example, the side covers may be removed quickly without any additional tools, affording easy access to the unit for cleaning and maintenance. The fountain solution tank can be filled quite easily by hand, the ergonomic design preventing splashes onto the units. Draining the tank is a simple process.

To prepare the fountain solution, high precision stainless steel piston metering pumps are used to deliver exact accurate metering of additive. Using these metering techniques, additives can be sucked up to 15 metres distance and pumped up to heights of 6 metres. Storage tanks blocking the working area of the press can be omitted. If required, by special design, additives can be sucked in distance from 80 metres. The tank capacity varies from 130 to 300 l, depending on the size of the unit. The metering capacity is up to 1,500 l/h (with 4 % of additives and 4 bar fresh water pressure), depending on which Automix system is used. For many years Baldwin has provided a digital Automix for the cabinet-type units as a special high-quality system for fully automatic fountain solution premixing. The AMX 226D digital fountain solution premixing system has proven its precise, electronically controlled metering of additive and water.

Baldwin BasicLiner

The BasicLiner units ensure that there will always be a sufficient quantity of clean, cool and premixed fountain solution in the fountain pans. The fountain solution is continuously filtered and circulated by a pump to the supply and return flow lines in the fountain pan. Desk types of less capacities use a full-flow cartridge filter, while the BasicLiner units with higher cooling capacities use high capacity filter mats. The formation of foam in the returning fountain solution is considerably minimized by means of Baldwin´s filter principle. Baldwin offers a range of BasicLiner units that are rated to different cooling and circulating capacities, and are available with a variety of optional equipment. These various sizes have tank capacities between 30 and 300 litres.

CobraLiner

The fountain solution circulation and cooling unit is designed for conditioning, filtration, cooling and pressurizing of the fountain solution required for the offset printing process. Depending on the system configuration, the fountain solution is pumped to one or more spray dampening units on the press units. The integrated cooling system also keeps the fountain solution temperature constant.

The CobraLiner system has an integrated metering device. This metering device of the Dosatron range automatically adds fountain solution additives to the water according to a preset percentage.

The fountain solution is cooled by an integrated refrigerating set with heat exchanger and air and/or watercooled condenser. A digital temperature controller with thermostat is used to control the refrigerant circuit. Fountain solution is cleaned by return flow filters F 40 P-J (optional) with filter element and housing provided on the site and by a filter system integrated in the unit.

Glycol-Cooler

At low outside temperatures (under approx. 18 °C), the ink roll heating and cooling circuit of the printing press can be cooled directly by the recooler (glycol cooler) in the so called winter mode. This relieves the refrigerating set in the CombiLiner from load and results in an effective electric power saving. In this case, the fan control is connected to the CombiLiner control via an interface. The setpoint can be set on the optional operating display or via the control simulation on the control console of the printing press.

The Glycol Cooler consists of a power controlled two-stage fan and a water-/air heat exchanger. In a water-/air heat exchanger, the warm water flowing through is cooled. The cooling at the heat exchanger is carried out by air-circulation with a fan. The fan's performance is controlled by an integrated control anda temperature sensor at the heat exchanger's outlet.

Pump cabinets

The pump station permanently supplies cooling water to the connected cooling systems (cooling center station, ink roll cooling temperature system and cooling unit) and/or the external cooler. The water, cooled by an external cooler, is supplied to the cooling systems via the pump station. The heated water from the cooling systems is passed to the cooler in a manifold and cooled again. Two jetting pumps provide permanent circulation of the water.

By contrast, the ink rollers are operated exclusively via the free cooling system at ambient temperatures less than 20°C. PerformanceFiltration

The fountain solution system in Baldwin's PerformanceFiltration series is ideally suited for online filtration of the process water used in circulating systems. During the filtration process, the fountain solution is freed from substances such as pigments, aromas, pulp and filling materials. When found in the fountain solution, these substances can seriously disrupt the printing process.

The fountain solution filtration system is connected to the fountain solution system as a bypass unit. Because of its operating principle, the filter change takes place independently from the process water circulation. The magnetic centrifugal pump guarantees the continuous flow (circulation) through the filtration system and the return flow to the fountain solution system. Following the filtration through various filter materials, the decontaminated water is pumped back into the fountain solution system. During the filtration process, substances that could disrupt the printing process are removed. Fountain solution additives and IPA, however, remain in the fountain solution.

Practical benefits:

Baldwin’s WebSiliconer provides outstanding coverage of silicone over the complete web width.

The combined pumping and metering station feeds a continuous supply of silicone emulsion to the two applicator units. The mixture ratio of these units can be adjusted in 0.5% steps. Pneumatic cylinders engage and disengage the rollers linearly with respect to the paper web. A web scraper prevents accidental contact with the paper when the rollers are disengaged. Two chromium plated rollers immersed in silicone apply the emulsion to both sides of the web.

The silicone/water ratio can be changed at any time, with easy access to the system.

It combines the latest in aerodynamic nozzle technology, web ionization and brushes, all in one turnkey system. The Jetstream features automatic splice detection and is available for web widths up to 4 meters. The compact design minimizes the space required for installation.

Jetstream functions with a high-velocity air flow that travels along the web surface through an aerodynamic nozzle and into the cleaning module, forcing dust particles into the module with it. An ionizing bar positioned upstream of the cleaning module compensates static electricity, enabling the loose particles.

Baldwin GuideRollerCleaner System

The cleaning system effectively removes ink and paper fibers from guide rollers. An applicator applies the right amount of solvent on a web, which is then run at crawl speed through the press. On its way it passes the guide rollers. Each roller is fitted with a self-adjusting brake that intermittently stops the roller and the friction between the soaked paper and the roller removes the unwanted build up - since all webs remain in position during the cleaning process.

Baldwin's pH Compact Measuring System 8205 is designed for determining the pH-value of the fountain solution. It allows you to evaluate the fountain solution quality quickly and accurately. The measuring range extends from 2 to 12 pH.

Baldwin Conductivity Compact Measuring System 8225 is designed for determining the electric conductance of the fountain solution, allowing evaluation of the solution quickly and accurately. The measuring range extends from 0 to 3200 μS/cm.

Baldwin Balcontrol Alcohol Measuring System measures the alcohol concentration in the fountain solution. The accuracy of the alcohol metering process lies within a +/- 1% (value determined by areometer) tolerance range, with a maximum metering capacity of 24 l/h.

IpaSonic Alcohol Measuring and Metering Equipment

Baldwin’s IpaSonic is a compact system for measuring 2-propanol concentrations in offset fountain solutions. IpaSonic utilizes the ultrasonic compression of liquid principle. The concentration is determined through using the direct matter constants of 2-propanol. Since the measuring is dependent on temperature, the temperature is simultaneously analyzed and necessary compensation is automatically carried out.

The most decisive advantage with the IpaSonic is no gradual deterioration of measuring values due to salt ingress and other contamination returning from the print processed fountain solution.

Ink Agitators

Baldwin Ink Agitators

The constant agitation of the ink in the ink fountain prevents a formation of a skin and therefore reduces the total consumption of printing inks. The consistency of the ink is ensured and distribution across the duct remains even.

Baldwin ink agitators are especially recommended for "short" inks, for security printing processes and printing processes with UV inks.
