KATZ Group innovations get seal of approval from Hewlett Packard Long-established, innovative producer of wood pulp board will be exhibiting at drupa for the very first time

The motto of this year's edition of drupa, the world’s leading trade fair for the printing and media industry, is “One world – one drupa”. The KATZ Group and its parent company the Koehler Paper Group have also decided to come together as one to create a joint booth at drupa 2012. From 3 to 16 May, the two companies will be inviting visitors to their 300-square-meter booth to learn more about concepts such as “Papers for the future” and “More than a cardboard…”.

“This will be our first time exhibiting at drupa as a specialist in wood pulp board, and I am pleased to report that we have already chalked up one success before the show has even started!” says KATZ Group CEO Daniel Bitton, referring to the recent approval of KATZ DISPLAY BOARDS for the very latest range of HP UV digital flatbed printers. “By successfully passing these printing tests, we have given our customers the reassurance of knowing that KATZ DISPLAY BOARDS are a great choice for digital printing. The HP Media Solutions Locator now features various different versions of our boards,” says Bitton.

And that is not the only thing that makes KATZ DISPLAY BOARDS such a superb choice in the field of graphic arts media. “HP is committed to sustainability, and our boards will be helping to make that concept more tangible at the printer manufacturer’s booth,” enthuses Nadja Scherer, Sales and Marketing Director at The KATZ Group. Scherer explains why their contacts at HP were so impressed by the KATZ DISPLAY BOARDS: “The core of our boards consists of nothing more than wood and water, and the manufacturing process fully adheres to the principles of sustainability”. At KATZ, that means using a closed loop system to ensure that old KATZ products can be recycled into new KATZ products at the end of their useful life. The company's state-of-the-art heat recovery system and its two very own water power plants ensure maximum energy efficiency, while its closed water loop helps conserve resources. All the wood used in the plant comes from sustainably managed forests, and the products used in creating the finished KATZ DISPLAY BOARDS are carefully chosen to enable the printed, laminated wood pulp boards to be composted after use.

Sustainability is high on the agenda of this year's drupa thanks to the international industry initiative Media Mundo – but at the Koehler Paper Group and The KATZ Group, sustainability has been a core principle for more than 100 years. Both companies' production sites have been closely integrated with their natural surroundings from the day they were built. Koehler Expands Energy Activities: New Subsidiary Established

On January 23, 2012 the directors of Koehler Holding GmbH & Co. KG and the management board of Papierfabrik August Koehler AG (Oberkirch) established a new subsidiary of Koehler Holding GmbH & Co. KG and filed for its entry in the trade register. The company’s name is Koehler Renewable Energy GmbH, and its purpose is the founding of renewable-energy companies, as well as the purchase and management of investments in other renewable-energy companies.

The Koehler Group runs an energy-intensive enterprise that has been investing in its own energy supplies for many years now. As a result, Koehler now operates power plants at all its locations, many of which have been the subject of expansion and new investment in recent years. For instance, at Oberkirch there is a circulating fluidized-bed combustion power station and a cold reserve, commissioned in 2011, plus four hydroelectric power stations. At Kehl Koehler operates a biomass CHP plant, with a second block commissioned in 2011 in a joint venture with RWE Innogy, while a new power station with highly efficient combined heat and power generation was inaugurated at Greiz (Thüringen) in 2011, and two further hydroelectric power plants were opened at Weisenbach.

The founding of Koehler Renewable Energy GmbH represents the latest major step in this direction. The aim is to work together with business partners in project companies, investing above all in combined heat and power generation in order to develop a new line of business by exploiting our outstanding in-house expertise in operating this kind of plant. We are also planning to invest in wind energy.

We are currently engaged in highly promising exploratory talks with potential business partners, and acquisition offers have already been made for various projects.

Papierfabrik August Koehler AG will invest €35 million at Oberkirch mill (Baden)

Over the next three years Papierfabrik August Koehler AG is going to invest €35 million to secure the future of the Oberkirch mill and with it safeguard 900 jobs.
The finishing equipment and logistics investment project comprises a fully-automatic reel wrapping machine for Koehler FineTech Papers and Decor Papers, a new sheeter for reacto® Carbonless Paper and thin printing papers, a central pallet wrapping line and reel packaging machine for thin printing paper and a fully-automatic high rack warehouse including dispatch area. The high rack warehouse will provide up to 16,000 storage bays. To intensify our R & D a pilot coater will be installed.
After approval of the project by the Supervisory Board on 6 December 2011, Koehler Paper Group will start the process right away. The work is scheduled for completion by the end of 2014.
“After focusing in recent years on investments at our mills in Kehl, Greiz and Weisenbach, in the coming years this investment will allow us to produce 160,000 tonnes of special paper in Oberkirch with greater efficiency. This highlights our confidence that, in Oberkirch, we will be able to manufacture our decor paper, fine and technical paper and carbonless paper in the long term, profitably and competitively. Since 30 years this will be the greatest single investment at the Oberkirch mill,” pronounces Kai Furler, CEO of the Koehler Paper Group.
Koehler Paper Group is a family owned company with a 200-year history, employing 1,800 people at its Oberkirch, Kehl and Weisenbach mills in the state of Baden-Württemberg and at Greiz in the state of Thuringia. It produces a total of 500,000 tonnes of thermal paper, carbonless paper, fine paper, technical paper, colored recycling paper, decor paper and wood pulp board. Total 2011 turnover will be approximately €700 million.
