High-Speed Fold-Gluing Systems for Rotary Printing

High-Speed Fold-Gluing Systems for Rotary Printing

Planatol is one of the leading manufacturers of fold-gluing systems for rotary printing and in partnership with printers and press manufacturers has significantly moved this technology forward. All over the globe millions of brochures, periodicals and magazines are glued every day by means of COMBIJET systems at high precision and speed.

In web direction and crosswise to the web direction – Planatol fold-gluing systems are groundbreaking in speed and precision. The modular structure enables us to build customized configurations for any production design.

Value-Added Services through Product Diversity
Our systems which are integrated into the folder of the rotary press allow fold-glued printed products to be realized in a single operation. This rationalizes the production process and increases efficiency. At the same time this technology provides finishing alternatives for printers and the possibility of producing additional printing formats for their customers.

Planatol System is the only supplier of cross-web gluing systems in the world. With this technology, products with short cut-off can also be glued in-line.

Longitudinal Gluing

Longitudinal Gluing

In commercial, semi-commercial, newspaper and rotogravure web presses, products are glued in-line along the back fold, after printing and before folding, in the direction of the paper web. This makes them easy to handle and gives them a high-value quality.

The new generation of the COMBIJET systems offers a very modern modular control system. In addition to the high-tech system COMBIJET 9NET, we offer the attractively priced basic system COMBIJET 9DT. Both systems provide top performance, simplicity and reliability.

Our systems are modular in order to better meet printers' differing requirements.

COMBIJET 9NET

High-Performance System for Longitudinal Gluing
Increased productivity, decreased set-up time and reduced waste are essential requirements of our web press customers.

COMBIJET 9NET provides an innovative technology which ensures that glue is being applied at high speed in a very precise and reliable way in the folder of the rotary press, saving the printer time and cost.

COMBIJET 9PV

The basic system for longitudinal gluing and fold-softening

Combijet 9 PV is a basic system for longitudinal gluing and fold-softening and meets the requirements of small and medium-sized web presses.

With up to eight applicator heads the system with modular media supply realises intermittent longitudinal gluing and continuous fold-softening of printed products from 8 to 64 pages.

Hotjet hotmelt system

The Hotjet series includes a wide range of special and standard solutions for various hotmelt applications.

Our hotmelt systems can be used in different markets, including paper converting and packaging (bookbinding, container, envelopes, folding cartons, corrugated boxes), graphics and printing, nonwoven and woven fabrics, woodworking or automotive.

Intelligent electronic controls combined with modern applicator heads allow for a fast and precise adhesive application. According to the customer's needs and under consideration of individual requirements we provide non-standard solutions for custom-made machines, such as coating equipment, screen printing machines or automated adhesive stands, as well as complete units.

On request, our service technicians provide troublefree commissioning and acceptance of the systems on-site.

Coldjet cold glue systems

Coldjet cold glue systems

The Coldjet series includes computerized systems for cold glue applications, which are used in different industries. We configure our systems according to the customer specifications and consider individual requirements to have them integrated optimally into existing machines. Therefore we offer in addition to control, applicator head and media supply also complementary equipment such as traverses, ejecting units and camera systems as well as sensors for quality assurance. Because of these additional components and the modular design of our Coldjet systems, we are able to offer adequate solutions for specific adhesive applications.

In addition to complete solutions for permanent integration in existing machines we also have Coldjet modules as stand-alone systems for various applications that can be put into operation easily by the client himself. These systems are small and movable and thus they can be integrated quickly into different processes without long setup times.

Application system and adhesive from one source: As provider of both components we are able to exactly match applicator head and adhesive to each other in order to ensure a smooth interaction.

Fold softening concentrates

Fold softening concentrates for any printing process

Moistening the back side of mostly overly dry LWC offset paper during the heatset process is frequently a production necessity. This is advantageous even for b-grade paper and newspaper. Planatol has developed very effective concentrates in conjunction with its COMBIJET and SOFTJET systems for reducing the bending stiffness of paper for a faster fold without tearing the paper and for folding the product's flat spine. As a result, setting hydrophobic surfaces such as printing ink and silicone is very important.

Fold Softening
As fold softening agents, we recommend:

Planatol DK X 0090: with corrosion protection
Planatol DK X 0090 UV: detectable via UV light

Hotmelts

Hotmelts

Hotmelts are anhydrous and solvent-free adhesives composted of a mixture of thermoplastic materials. They are inexpensive and can be processed at very high machine speeds.

The most common base polymer is EVA, but this product line also includes adhesives based on APAO, PE, polyester and polyamide.

The book manufacturing business primarily uses EVA-based hotmelts. For perfect binding, Planatol offers a complete range of products with different qualities and a medium open time. Hotmelts with a longer open time are required for lateral glue applications.

Any of the types of hotmelts previously mentioned may be used in the packaging industry and for special applications.

Product category: Polyurethane (PUR) adhesives

PUR Hotmelts

Planatol has been developing PUR thermoplastic adhesives for years and produces them in a certified, state-of-the-art agitator unit in the company's own production facility.

For perfect binding
PUR thermoplastic adhesives for machine-made perfect binding are always used when conventional adhesives fail:

- for thickly coated paper with grammage above 130 g
- for foil paper
- for digitally printed paper
- for full-surface printed sheets
- for book blocks containing foil / film
- PUR thermoplastic adhesives are still soft after processing, but harden over several hours due to a chemical reaction with the paper fibres and humidity from the environment, resulting in a flexible, extremely firm product under extreme temperatures.

For the timber industry
PUR thermoplastic adhesives are also used in the timber and furniture industries due to their tremendous ultimate strength and durability. Planatol PUR is also available for manufacturing finished parquet flooring and for double-ply veneer.

Further information on our adhesives for the woodworking industry is available here.

Special considerations when processing PUR
Processing PUR requires special equipment and expertise. Our applications engineering department provides customers with individual assistance, extensive informational materials and experienced technical support.

About us

Company details

Certainly every one has had a product in their hands at some time which contains a Planatol adhesive or is produced with a Planatol system. For not only books, such as "Harry Potter" are produced with the help of Planatol products, but also brochures, corporate reports, advertising and packaging material and a lot of other products.

80 years ago, in 1932, the founder of the company, Willy Hesselmann, began to use the artificial resin dispersions industrially, which had just been discovered. Initially, artificial resin dispersions and suitable adhesive machinery were manufactured. Planatol was actively involved in the development of adhesive binding from the very beginning and continues to set standards today with its pioneering product program.

The original concept of offering adhesives together with the application systems is still valid today. Planatol is the market leader for fold gluing and fold softening systems for longitudinal and cross-web gluing in rotary printing machines. Planatol is the only supplier worldwide to offer systems for cross-web gluing as well as the only provider that offers both adhesive and applications system.

For small and medium-sized runs in bookbinding and print processing, Planatol offers easy to use perfect binding devices.

Planatol's range of adhesives for the graphic arts and coating industry is big: cold glues, hot melts, PUR, pressure sensitive adhesives on water, water-free and solvent-borne base are offered. In addition, fountain solutions for the IPA-containing, IPA-reduced and IPA-free rotary and sheet-fed presses are produced.
