LED UV technology

The technology, with which inks, varnishes, silicones and adhesive are cured using UV light, has plenty to offer the printing and coating industry. Since the start of this millennium, LEDs have been used in addition to arc lamps for UV curing.

The light-emitting diodes are based on semiconductor connections, which convert current directly into light. If electricity flows through an LED in the forward direction, it emits energy in the form of visible light, infrared or even ultraviolet radiation. LED UV systems work in the UVA/UVV range between 365 and 405 nm. Experience has shown that an LED performs best in a wavelength range of 385 nm when used for UV curing.

UV LEDs are used anywhere their specific advantages are required. LED UV units can be used as soon as they are switched on. They release very little heat on to the substrate, which means they can be positioned very close to the substrate surface, i.e. at a distance of 10 to 20 mm. The compact systems are cascadable and have a particularly long service life. The LEDs on an array (field) can also be individually controlled, according to where light is required on the substrate.

The efficiency of an LED chip is known as External Quantum Efficiency (EQE). This describes the ability of the LED to convert electrons into photons. EQE does not set the standard for the daily efficiency of an LED, however. The output requirements and optical applications also need to be taken into consideration.

LED UV systems are used in both the printing industry and a number of other industries where coatings play a role. LED-UV technology currently makes up the greatest proportion of adhesive curing and inkjet printing. In the coming years, a significant increase in the market share of LED UV systems is expected.

UV curing systems

The UV curing process uses UV energy and light from the visible light spectrum in wavelengths from 200 to 480 nm. UV energy "cures" inks and varnishes in a fraction of a second. A UV system consists essentially of the following components: UV lamps, reflectors, lamp housings, a cooling system and an electronic operating and control system. A range of additional options can then be added as required. We manufacture to the highest quality standards with precise production of individual components, meticulous calibration of the UV units and the seamless integration of the UV system into the production process.

LED UV Measurement technology

The output of a UV lamp is measured in W/cm. It describes the electrical input, i.e. the electrical power input per centimetre of lamp length. The output of a UV LED, however, is given in W/cm². This represents the optical output, i.e. the light output per square centimetre.

No standards for measurement devices

The measurements carried out using LED UV systems are not currently standardised and thus cannot be compared for users. There are currently no standard measurement devices available that are calibrated according to specific standards. At the moment, the measurement devices used are calibrated for mercury vapour lamps and have an insufficient spectral sensitivity.

Measuring position and measuring field crucial

For comparable measurement results, the place at which the output was measured is also important. Depending on whether the measurement takes place on the chip surface, at the exit window of the radiation or on the substrate level, there will be different values. The spatial and temporal distribution in the measuring field also needs to be taken into consideration.

The company will be showing the practical application of its systems on a printing press on its stand, demonstrating the use of UV lamp systems for printing packaging and UV LED systems for commercial printing on a Heidelberg Speedmaster XL75-6+L (UV-Anicolor). The machine will run four times a day and make a printed product developed especially for the trade fair to highlight the benefits of the technology for the target group in question.
