About us

Company details

DataLase is at the forefront of the printing revolution, delivering innovative, high speed, high quality, inline digital printing solutions to brand owners and converters.

It is a high growth technology company with an extensive portfolio of products and Intellectual Property in the field of laser reactive colour change materials. Based in the UK, DataLase has business development offices in both Boston, USA and Tokyo, Japan. Its extensive strategic coatings, substrate and laser partner network throughout Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia provides the company with a global reach.

DataLase technology is applied as an ink or coating or incorporated directly into a substrate material. When the coating or substrate is exposed to a low power CO2 laser on a production line, it generates a colour change reaction in the pigment resulting in a high definition, premium quality digital print finish.

The unique combination of DataLase materials in an ink or coating with low power CO2 laser technology produces a digital print performance that exceeds the quality of traditional printing techniques.

The inline technology can be used on both primary and secondary packaging, across virtually any substrate, to print date and lot codes, 2-D data matrix codes, barcodes, images and graphics.

The solution also opens up a wealth of opportunities for printing in applications that have been considered impossible or problematic using traditional techniques.

The DataLase advantage for brand owners

The DataLase solution is an inline digital print solution. It brings a wealth of advantages for brand owners to deliver high quality, timely, flexible product marketing solutions for maximum impact.

DataLase enables late stage customisation and personalisation of products and packaging to deliver just-in-time flexible marketing campaigns. Promotions, advertising, unique codes, track and trace and tailored messages can be integrated into pack designs at the point of packing and filling.

Enabling SKU minimisation through application of variable text, data and images tailored to the individual pack or batch level, DataLase is also a sustainable print solution.

Printed images are high definition and durable with no post-print smudging and rub off, minimising risks of errors, returns and supply chain waste. As an inkless technology, at the point of print, DataLase also avoids risks of migration and contamination in the packing of sensitive products.

Uniquely incorporated inline in the packing or filling process, DataLase offers brand owners the solution to high-speed variable print, maximising marketing effectiveness and value.

The Datalase advantage for converters

DataLase is a high quality inline digital print technology, which avoids the need for converters to invest in large-scale digital capacity, whilst competing in the high growth market for late stage customisation of packs.

Working with a number of strategic ink, coating, substrate and laser partners around the world to deliver a complete inline digital solution, DataLase technology can be incorporated into a range of coatings, including water based, solvent based and UV curable systems.

Suitable for use on a wide range of substrates and packaging applications, including labels, flexible films, cartons, bottles and closures, the DataLase technology is high-speed patch printed by the converter, ready for laser printing at the point of packing or filling.

The solution offers a high quality, cost effective alternative to traditional labels and printing methods and uses a non-toxic, environmentally friendly coating that provides a stable, high contrast and durable image on virtually any substrate using low-power CO2 lasers.

Incorporated in over four billion packs in 2015, DataLase is effective, efficient and evolving. It provides converters with a cost effective, high added value solution for today’s fast moving packaging printing market.

The latest technology development - Variprint®

This is a new innovative digital printing platform which combines DataLase core colour-change technology with the next generation of ultra high performance lasers.

A breakthrough in inline laser digital printing, this new high-speed solution has a monochrome colour additive that enables the printing of a substrate with a single colour choice. Variprint uses new Laser Diode Array (LDA) technology to generate a colour change, which is activated over the top of a pre-printed substrate, for example a bottle label or secondary carton pack.

It allows printers to print variable codes, text and images on-demand at normal production speeds in a single colour choice – for example ingredients, languages, promotions, adverts, branding and general graphics. Variprint moves inline digital technology forward from traditional black/white/clear colour combinations and extends the opportunity for brand owners and converters to benefit from inline digital printing in traditional print sectors.
