About us

Company details

Smyth Srl is a leading manufacturer of automatic and semi-automatic bookbinding machinery, based in Italy. Our company takes its name from its founder David McConnell Smyth, an Irish American inventor, who patented the first book sewing machine in the USA in 1879.

Since then the process of sewing through the fold in a signature is still referred to as “Smyth Sewing” worldwide. This is the reason why our company is proud to be the original inventor of Smyth Sewing, quoting its motto “It is not really Smyth Sewn unless it’s sewn on a Smyth machine”.

Smyth produces book sewing machines, gathering and sewing lines, back gluing lines, casemakers, perfect binders, special book sewers and the latest digital print finishing solutions. These are the state-of-the-art solutions to produce thread-sewn books starting from digitally printed flat sheets, satisfying the increasing demand for short run productions (i.e “Book on-Demand, Photobook and all high end publications).

As evidence of the continuous commitment towards innovation, our R&D department continues to develop new technologies and deposit new patents, staying ahead of the competition.

Our products are distributed and installed worldwide. Smyth sales network is composed of a mix of distribution companies and direct agents who cover more than 65 countries worldwide on 5 continents, attesting the quality, value and ability to execute.

We have a strong and reliable Customer service. Our after-sales department is able to provide customers, with prompt and high quality assistance worldwide, through  an active collaboration with our partner companies and distributors.
