Research project planning at Fogra

In the Federal Republic of Germany there are more than a hundred industries whose medium-sized member companies have banded together to form associations for joint industrial research. The umbrella organization for these research associations, the German Federation of Industrial Research Associations [AiF] plays an active role and Fogra is one of its founder members.

In the first instance, it is the task of AiF members to investigate questions that might help companies to increase production reliability and quality. These are questions that are of comparable importance to a large number of companies but whose investigation exceeds the capabilities of any single medium-sized company. Joint research therefore provides an appropriate solution.

Subsequently, it is of great importance that the results of the research are transferred. For Fogra this means consistently acting as a provider of services to the printing industry and supporting companies through expert advice, reliable services and a range of high quality training courses and symposia in order to implement the knowledge that has been gained.

Standardization and Committees

Fogra protects and promotes the interests of its members in the field of standardization through its involvement in numerous standards committees.

Fogra provides the Chairman of the International Organization for Standardization [ISO] Technical Committee 130 [Graphic Technology] and two of its staff members lead work groups of this technical committee. The tasks of these span standardization in the areas of prepress data exchange, process control, measurement technology, materials and machine safety.

Company details

Service Provider for the Printing Industrie

The objective of Fogra Forschungsgesellschaft Druck e.V. [Fogra Graphic Technology Research Association] is to promote print engineering and its future-oriented technologies in the fields of research and development, and to enable the printing industry to utilize the results of this activity. To this end the association maintains its own institute, with about 60 staff membersincluding engineers, chemists and physicists. The estimated budget for 2007 is approximately € 5,5 million. About 20 % of this is made up of membership fees.

Research grants from the Federal German Government, the state of Bavaria and the German Printing And Media Industries Federation (bvdm) account for roughly 36 %, with the principal share of 32 % coming from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology for the support of “Industrielle Gemeinschaftsforschung (IGF)” via the German Federation of Industrial Research Associations (AiF).

About 40 % of the revenues are generated from other Fogra activities. These consist of technical reports, contract research, the sale of quality control devices, vocational training, and a literature database.

The remaining revenues are made up of donations and other receipts. The donations are usually equipment or printing papers for research purposes.

Fogra has about 700 members. About two third them are graphic art businesses operating in fields ranging from prepress through to bookbinding, while the remaining third are suppliers. A third of the members are based outside Germany.

The Technical Committees, responsible for various specialist topics, are a central part of Fogra. In these committees, specialists from printing businesses, and Fogra staff, define industry problems which are to be studied. The progress and results of work are also discussed at the Committee meetings. Thus the Committees fulfil a creative and a monitoring function. At the same time they characterise the work style of a collective research institute which meets the needs of the printing industry.
