DRUPA CUBE SESSION - Print Futures: How to create high value in print (HALL 6/F03)

Print is dead. There’s no money in print. We’re all going paperless.
Not quite.

Such buzzwords that have made their ways around. Yet thriving events such as drupa show how future oriented the print industry is and how it is constantly reinventing itself. The print industry has indeed undergone a dramatic shift in the past years. Exciting ideas are leveraging the value of printed materials. The exceptional haptic of paper and special inks makes reading an exciting experience. Die cuts or fine laser cuts catch the eye and provide a powerful medium for promotion.

Creating print projects with innovative special finishings means creating an impression – an opportunity to stay in the mind of people. This session will inspire you how to create an amazing user experience with printing materials and packaging.

We will dig into which special finishing technologies can be used, with what effect, which role paper plays and evoke challenges in print production.

Stephanie Kienapfel who leads the professional print team at Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper and Natascha Gruber, category manager for tinted and offset papers, will guide you through this session. It will be held in cooperation with the Swiss company Sonderegger – experts for exceptional finishings such as fine laser cutting, impressive embossing and creative hot stamping.

Stephanie Kienapfel has 20 years experience at Mondi she has built up a vast experience in paper and printing technology. Stephanie loves creating exceptional tools playing with special finishes and accompany a project from the idea to the finalised printed product.

Natascha Gruber drove several marketing campaigns for Mondi’s paper brands including the creation of exceptional marketing tools that convey the value of paper. Natascha loves to dive into branding projects and complement it with her personal creative touch.

Bruno Sonderegger describes himself a true paper ambassador and heads the family business Sonderegger! When Bruno took over the company, he changed the focus of the business to provide high-end special finishing services. The Sonderegger experts know how important non-verbal communication is – and included the concept into their products. Shaping the impossible is the company’s claim, and that’s what they do – in a creative and highly commited team - constantly growing in experience, knowledge and adapting to technology changes.

DRUPA CUBE SESSION - Business Evolution: How can printing houses conduct successful social selling (HALL 6/F03)

You have a website. You use google. On your Facebook profile there’s some cat videos. You know a few other social media channels. Does that mean you’re up to date on social selling. Probably not.

We will consider which value digital marketing brings to B2B companies, specifically in long-standing industries such as the print & paper industry. How do we know? We tried it out. Follow the development of Pergraphica – Mondi’s design paper brand – and how Mondi built a community of creative paper lovers and print experts around this brand. This did not happen by accident. We are putting a lot of effort into building a content strategy and finding the right stories, carefully selected suitable social channels – and overcame some challenges. Get valuable insights into how you can build a successful and focused social media strategy for your own business.

Markus Widmer will host this session. He leads the customer experience team with a special focus on digital marketing. His experience in social media and digital marketing spans over 15 years already. You’d think that a tech-savvy person like Markus would focus on digital only – wrong – he likes to call himself a paper lover.

Mondi collaborates with French design school with its premium design paper brand PERGRAPHICA® - projects will be showcased at drupa

  • Students of École Supérieure de Design de Troyes will take part in a design competition using Pergraphica® premium design paper to create unique marketing giveaways
  • Winning designs to be showcased at the international trade fair, drupa 2020 in Düsseldorf, Germany
17 January 2020 – Mondi, global leader in packaging and paper, has today announced its collaboration with the French design school École Supérieure de Design in Troyes, France, for its PERGRAPHICA® premium design paper.

The École Supérieure de Design de Troyes, founded in 2004, is one of the leading design schools in France with a focus on product design, space design, visual communication and design strategy. As part of their final year Bachelor´s studies, students are invited to participate in a series of workshops, culminating in a design competition launched by Mondi. The objective is to develop concepts and visuals highlighting Mondi´s premium design paper, Pergraphica, for use in high-end marketing giveaways, such as notebooks and bags. Pergraphica branded papers are manufactured in Mondi´s Neusiedler production site in Austria and are designed for creative printing and packaging applications.

How students will participate in the design competition:

  • The collaboration starts on 17 January 2020 with an introductory presentation by Zoe Truchy, Product and Brand Manager Design Papers at Mondi, describing the project brief and scope to the students in Troyes.
  • By the end of March, the students will submit their final projects. These should be innovative and express their creativity, while respecting the overall values and essence of the Pergraphica paper brand: delivering creative ideas on uncoated design paper to inspire, create emotions and leave a unique, tactile impression.
  • The winning projects will be selected at the end of March and produced for launch at drupa, the leading printing technology exhibition, held in June 2020 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
“We highly appreciate collaborating with international companies such as the Mondi Group,” says Karima Bidar, graphic designer and teacher at École Supérieure de Design de Troyes. “With this, we offer our students access to working with international companies and design products as part of their studies. The presentation of the winning projects at drupa, the largest printing equipment exhibition in the world, is a fantastic opportunity for them to showcase their skills and creativity to a broad audience.”

“This collaboration underlines our commitment to support the next generation of designers in providing them access to premium design papers and in exploring the versatile possibilities they offer,” states Zoe Truchy, Product and Brand Manager, Mondi.

Why colour management matters

When it comes to perfect colour reproduction, using the best paper is one thing. Knowing how to make it work with any device is another.

Before we dive into the complexities of colour management, let's take a step back and determine what colour is in the first place. In its most basic definition, colour is simply a phenomenon of light and visual perception that enables us to differentiate between objects which would look identical without it. Meaning: colour not only allows us to see vividly, it allows us to see in the first place.

Mondi and the cycle of sustainability

The possibility to create high-quality paper from a waste-product is a great thing. However, paper cannot be recycled indefinitely.

It's the year 2019 and recent months have made clear that there is one topic that will keep occupying our attention for years to come: the climate crisis. Floods, droughts, and various other weather phenomena are harbingers of what's to come, if a global rethinking of current energy consumption doesn't happen soon. That is a fact, one that has been urgently communicated by the vast majority of climate scientists.

It may sound like a doomsday scenario, but if we act now, it won't be. We can all do our part to mitigate the impact of an ever-warmer climate. In Mondi's case, it is not merely our commitment to sustainability and the reduction of our CO2-footprint, but also our commitment to producing Nautilus, our own brand of recycled paper.
