Study Program Print Media Technologies at Stuttgart Media University

In Germany, Print Media Technologies is the first and only international undergraduate program in engineering dedicated to media, which is exclusively taught in English and designed for students from across the world. It is a unique subject which combines creativity, science, technology, intercultural studies, corporate management and languages.

Graduates enjoy high quality jobs. The placement rate is 100%. The program is to form educated leaders and practitioners on media issues; this includes senior technical, management and marketing positions across the world. Graduates work in internationally expanding businesses. The program is firmly designed to promote proficiency in media engineering; in addition students will develop critical-thinking and public-speaking skills. More information here.

New technologies continue to develop. Variable data printing for the individualisation of packaging and personalisation of commercial print will play a more prominent role in communication and marketing. The symbioses between the Internet and print media offers new products, revolutionizing the way we communicate and triggering new marketing strategies. Read more at Future of Print Media.

The faculty runs a unique, state-of-the-art learning center equipped with advanced media technology i.e. the latest printing machines used in the industry. It is the largest and best equipped centre in Europe and features a number of laboratories and studios, including digital and commercial printing presses, creative printing set-ups, 3D printing, a packaging print factory and the latest post press equipment used for binding and finishing. Students will also take advantage of a new pre-media facility using the latest digital technologies and specific workflows available to the media industry.

Research on Innovative Applications of the Printing Technologies

The research group Innovative Applications of Printing Technologies deals with questions in the area of functional printing. The focus here is not on the information transfer (graphical applications), but on the functionality of the print products. Usually the electrical conductivity of the printed materials is the foremost property. However, other functionalities such as sensors and haptics, as well as physical and chemical properties of printed structures are target of the research. In the field of functional printing, mainly screen printing is used as the preferred printing process.

The working group IAD is one of the profile-building research centers (so-called lighthouses) that further improve the visibility and competence of the HdM.

Research Topics
The main research topics at the IAD during the past fifteen years, were the printing technology of antenna structures for different frequency ranges, the realization and characterization of fully printed, portable primary and secondary batteries as well as in the area of "energy harvesting" printed thermogenerators that work on the principle of the Seebeck effect. Printed sensors with different operating principles are implemented in cooperation with industrial partners.

The Stuttgart Media University (HdM) is the only university institution in Europe to have complete prepress and machine equipment for all industrial printing processes. In the screen printing laboratory not only the complete infrastructure for printing form preparation (screen tensioning system, automatic coating system, exposure system and washout stations) is available but also several precision screen printing machines and an extensive range of measuring technology for characterizing the printing forms and the printed structures. The equipment of the university's measurement technology lab allows the application of numerous characterization methods and performance tests of the prints and substrates, whereby weaknesses in the process can be identified and targeted optimization can be carried out.
