Web Sessions "Sustainable Premium Packaging"
Recyclable substrates, inks, coatings, iriodines and thin-film finishes will be the focus of the PrintCity Alliance seminar. But also many innovations in the production of materials show the way of the packaging industry to a higher environmental awareness.
This will be exemplified by Better Human, the PrintCity Alliance holistic concept for small electronic device packaging, and other samples.

Sustainable Premium Packaging: Better Human with UV / LED UV

The Better Human project shows how premium packaging can be reconciled with the demands of environmental protection and sustainability.
In a second series of our Better Human project on the occasion of drupa 2021, new finishes and UV and LED-UV technology will be used.

The fictitious Better Human brand has now expanded its business area, originally based on small electronic devices, and now also offers ecologically compatible S[h]aver disposable razors for women and men. For the Ear[th]Buds there is now a blue version with additional refinements

The central topics are the reduction of the CO2 balance, the use of renewable raw materials and the recyclability of the packaging. The construction, the materials, the finishing and the production are designed to meet the requirements of the Packaging Ordinance. In addition, a concept for recycling plastics that arise during production will be presented.

This means that the new sample packaging with UV, pigments, cold transfer and hot stamping can also be recycled.

The experiences from design to finishing and material selection to production are again summarized in tutorials.
The environamental issues are summarized in a folder (download all PDF below).

Boards that enhance your Brands

The lightweight, sustainable folding boxboards from Metsä Board range from products with a natural feel to luxury impression, including the plastic-free eco-barrier paperboard. Their excellent performance ensures they are suitable for all types of applications and end-uses. If you are looking for packaging that efficiently enhances valuable brands, or is pure for sensitive products, we have a board grade perfect for you.

All our boards are made from fresh fibres, which can be traced back to their source in sustainably managed northern forests. Folding boxboard is recognised as being made from a renewable material and being recyclable, giving it an important role in the circular economy.

Recognising the wide choice of products that we offer, we have created four distinct and memorable categories to help speed up the product selection process.

Natural – these products provide a ‘natural’ look and feel with good printability, lifting up colors and images.

Classic – products included in this category combine reliable performance with excellent value for money, making them ideal for fast moving consumer goods requiring good shelf visibility and safety for food use.

Pro – these products offer high brightness and smoothness, and are designed for high value products that require outstanding brand promotion through more demanding printing, converting and forming techniques.

Prime – the products in this category are ideal for premium high-end brands, combining excellent brightness and surface smoothness characteristics, to help achieve world-class printing, converting and special effects.

Better Human - Packaging for small electronic devices

Better Human is a fictitious brand that produces high-quality products on a sustainable basis.
All Better Human products are made of sustainable and recyclable components such as wood from sustainable forests (no tropical woods), corn starch or algae.
To emphasize the sustainability of these products, Better Human uses only highly recyclable packaging materials and resource-saving packaging concepts.
Better Human's target group covers all age groups and genders. Better Human customers are characterized by their willingness to spend a premium price for environmentally consciously produced electronic devices. Being a "better human" thus becomes a statement and the brand would probably have a great chance to become successful in the real market.

The tutorials (download PDF below) summarize the experience from design to finishing and material selection to production.

Nature Cosmetics Packaging

This 4-part presentation box was produced for the Merck Color Forecast for cosmetic applications. The semi-annual forecast shows the current fashionable color themes and how these can be implemented with effect pigments in cosmetic products such as lipsticks.

Another area of application for such multi-part constructions is gift packaging.

The box consists of a total of four parts: the storage box, the lid, the inlay and the sleeve.
There is also an A4 sample on which the most important finishes are shown in a cutout.
In addition to bronzing with effect pigments, various hot stamping with nanoembossing and matt / gloss effects are used.

The tutorial (download PDF below) summarizes the experiences from design, finishing, material selection to production.
